Pick Guanacaste's resort coast if you want a short transfer from Liberia airport, big resorts and calm bays. Pick the Nicoya Peninsula if you'd rather have small towns, boutique hotels and quieter beaches, and don't mind a longer journey to get them.
What counts as "Guanacaste" and what counts as "Nicoya"?
Strictly speaking, the whole coast from Tamarindo south sits on the Nicoya Peninsula, and its northern half is in Guanacaste province. But when travelers compare the two, they mean two different trips:
- Guanacaste beaches: the resort coast within about 1½ hours of Liberia airport (LIR): the Papagayo Peninsula, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Ocotal, Flamingo, Conchal and Tamarindo. Our sister site covers them in its Guanacaste beaches guide.
- Nicoya Peninsula beaches: the quieter coast from Nosara south through Sámara and Carrillo to Santa Teresa, Malpaís and Montezuma at the tip, plus the calm Gulf side at Tambor and Curú. That's what this site covers: see every beach, south to north.
How long does it take to get there?
This is the biggest difference. Most of Guanacaste's resort beaches are 30 minutes to 1½ hours from Liberia airport on paved roads, so you can be on the sand the afternoon you land. The Nicoya Peninsula takes longer:
- Sámara and Carrillo: 2 to 2¼ hours from Liberia airport, paved all the way.
- Nosara: 2 to 2½ hours from Liberia airport, with a gravel last stretch; or a 45-minute flight from San José airport (SJO).
- Santa Teresa, Malpaís and Montezuma: 4½ to 5½ hours from Liberia airport, 5½ to 6 hours from San José airport with the Puntarenas ferry, or a 30- to 35-minute flight from San José to Cóbano airport (ACO). See getting to Santa Teresa.
Insider tip: the peninsula works best as the last stop of your trip, with at least four nights. If you only have three or four nights at the beach in total, Guanacaste's shorter transfer gives you more time on the sand.
Which is more crowded and developed?
Guanacaste is more built up. The Papagayo Peninsula and Playa Conchal are home to large, full-service resorts, including the Four Seasons, the Andaz, the Westin and the W, and Tamarindo is a busy surf town with plenty of restaurants, shops and nightlife.
The Nicoya Peninsula is smaller in scale. Santa Teresa has largely avoided high-rise development: it's one road of small hotels, cafés and yoga studios. In Nosara, Playa Guiones lies inside a wildlife refuge, so nothing is built on the beach. Sámara is a small, walkable Costa Rican beach town, and Montezuma a village of a few streets. You'll still find a few larger hotels, such as the all-inclusive resort at Tambor and Hotel Punta Islita, but most places to stay are boutique hotels, bungalows and villas.
Where is the swimming calmest?
Guanacaste's bays are some of the calmest in Costa Rica: Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá, Ocotal, Potrero and Flamingo have gentle water. Conchal is beautiful but drops off steeply, and Tamarindo is better for surfing than swimming.
On the peninsula, the Pacific side is surf country: Santa Teresa and Nosara have strong rip currents, and most beaches have no lifeguards. The calm water is at Sámara and Carrillo, behind reefs and headlands; at Playa Garza near Nosara; and on the Gulf side, where Tambor, Curú and Isla Tortuga are 45 minutes to an hour from Santa Teresa.
